STAFFORDSHIRE HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST CHURCH TOURS IN 2018

SUNDAY 17TH JUNE at 2.00pm BLACK COUNTRY.

We shall be visiting 3 churches in WEDNESBURY.

  1. St Bartholomew, WSIO 9DE
  2. St Mary (RC neighbouring church)
  3. St Francis, FRIAR PARK W310 OHS followed by tea.

St Bartholomew’s a fine medieval hilltop parish church with a spire and wide-ranging views. It is much rebuilt with a beautiful highly ornamental interior. 14th Century Lectern, Jacobean Pulpit, Kempe glass.

St Mary’s RC Church (1873) with green copper spire.

St Francis 20th C (1937-41) Italian Romanesque. Memorable and fine with a well-furnished interior. TEA will be served here.

 WEDNESDAY 11TH JULY STAFFORDSHIRE/SHROPSHIRE BORDER ALL DAY.

 We start at l0-30am (coffee) for an 11 am start

  1. St Chad PATTINGHAM WV6 7BG.
  2. St Mary PATSHULL
  3. All Saints CLAVERLEY
  4. Holy Innocents TUCKHILL
  5. Holy Cross BOBBINGTON

Pattingham is a large medieval village church with notable Early English Chancel. Some good Victorian furnishing J Oldrid Scott) and glass by Kempe & Tower.
Patshull is an important Classical estate church, designed by James Gibbs (1743) adjacent to Hall.

LUNCH break (Pub or bring Picnic). We then move into Shropshire to

Claverley, a fine medieval church in a picturesque village setting. Interior has amazing Wall Paintings c.1200 reminiscent of Bayeux Tapestry

Tuckhill is a small Victorian church (1865) and finally Bobbington.

  1. All Saints LEIGH STIO 4PT
  2. St John HOLLINGTON
  3. St Leonard BRADLEY IN THE MOORS
  4. St Giles CROXDEN

Leigh is 12th C, rebuilt in grand scale in 1846. A masterpiece of architect Thomas Johnson of Lichfield. An early example of correct ecclesiastical Gothic Revival. Central Tower, Pugin tiles in the chancel, West Window 1874 Wm Morris & Burne-Jones.

Hollington (1859-61) design of striking originality by GE. Street. Glass by Clayton & Bell (1861)

Bradley (1750) is a small Georgian church in classical style, architecturally unaltered.

Croxden (1884-5) replacing medieval Chapel by the gate of the Cistercian Abbey. Visit followed by TEA.
